International Women's Day 2018
/IWD 8 March 2018
What is Ergo Law up to on International Women's Day?
We will be getting together with some of Edinburgh's power ladies (thank you Victoria of Stewart Christie for coining the term and including us in this bracket!) as part of an initiative sparked by Charlotte of the Pantry Edinburgh and supported by Tamsin of Wonderhouse Creative to make some noise to celebrate female entrepreneurs in Edinburgh on IWD.
Ermmm what kind of noise are Ergo going to be making?
Well, we hear that there will be bloody marys at Finn and Bear so anything could happen...but mainly we are going to be sharing far and wide on social media the stories of women owned businesses in Edinburgh and how they work hard to #pressforprogress every day in their respective industries. We are thrilled that these ladies will also be sharing our story and hope that together we will contribute to the message of mutual support and ambition that International Women's Day represents.
What is the Ergo Law story?
Ergo Law is a boutique law firm specialising in employment law, based in Edinburgh and established by two solicitors Emma Reid and Cathy Donald, with the aim of staking a place for a different type of firm in a traditional legal landscape.
Emma and Cathy saw a gap in the market for a law firm which embraced flexible working and a modern business model.
Becoming women in leadership in law
Female business owners are in a minority- particularly in some of the more traditional industries such as law where it is still very unusual to find a female owned firm.
This is the case despite the fact that female solicitors have outnumbered their male colleagues in Scotland since 2015.
For Emma and Cathy, a significant motivation behind setting up the firm was a wish to achieve better balance between work and life as well as driving their careers forward.
In addition, with some issues in the workplace such as maternity and pregnancy discrimination, there are good reasons why individuals and businesses alike are keen to instruct a female solicitor.
What is Ergo Law doing to #pressforprogress?
Ergo Law’s message is simple- law doesn’t need to be dry and distant. Instead, Ergo provides a service which is compassionate and spirited as well as being of the highest professional standard. We will use our voice as entrepreneurs and employment lawyers, to contribute to the discussion surrounding gender inclusivity alongside our fellow business owners, friends and colleagues to celebrate women's achievements and forge increased positive visibility of women.
